Hello Everyone, My name is Steven Houston, the son of Captain Sam Houston, USN, Ret., and I am a medical student at the University of Virginia, soon to begin my 4th year. I have an intense interest in becoming an Ophthalmologist, an eye surgeon. Upon completion of medical school, I want to devote some of my time to providing eye care around the world to those without access to medical facilities. I am a volunteer with EyeCareWeCare Foundation, Inc., an all volunteer non-profit legitimate 501 (c)(3)organization that is currently providing eye care and eyeglasses to those in need in the Philippines. My association with the foundation will provide me an opportunity to experience first hand the hardships and struggles that people face in other countries, in particularly the Philippines, and what I can do to help the less fortunate people. Imagine not being able to clearly see your children’s faces, or not being able to see the print on this page. Millions in the United States suffer from near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism, all correctable by glasses and contacts. We have grown accustomed to everyone having access to eyeglasses, whether at Wal-Mart, the Mall, or your local optometrist. However, the luxury of eyeglasses is not the same in many other countries. There are millions around the world who are nearly blind because they cannot afford nor have access to eyeglasses. The Foundation is striving to bring the basic necessity of eyesight to everyone. EyeCareWeCare Foundation, Inc. was established in 2001. After 3 years of preparation, the Foundation started its first medical vision mission on Negros Occidental Island in the Philippines. It currently conducts the missions twice a year. The team of volunteers just returned from the Philippines this past January, 2008, where they examined 1,559 rural poor people, and 1,538 pairs of eyeglasses were dispensed. You should see the smiles on children’s faces when they are able to see for the first time. The next trip to the Philippines is planned for this summer. Although the Foundation is based in America, its Philippine branch office is in the Barangay (village) Ma-ao, Bago City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. Future plans are to grow and expand the free vision services to the rest of the Philippines. Once that has taken place, and as the organization grows it plans to expand to other Asian countries of Thailand, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Viet Nam and Taiwan. The Foundation is looking forward to its second priority project, the 1st being a "Clinic on Wheels" to cover much larger areas, and now a “Surgical Clinic on Wheels”. The intent is to raise money through fundraisers, golf tournaments, etc., and donations to purchase another bus to convert into a mobile surgical clinic. When both of these mobile vision clinics become a reality, the foundation plans to keep it staffed with volunteers year round. It will be transported by ferryboat to other islands of the 7,100 islands in the Philippines. Another project is to build an optical lab on Negros Occidental, Philippines so it will be able to make eyeglasses for the difficult prescriptions that cannot be found in the huge inventory of donated eyeglasses. It already has most of the lab equipment that is needed to edge uncut lenses but it needs surfacing equipment and lens blanks. The Foundation’s goal and mission is to provide the poor people of the world access to free quality vision services. Please log on to www.eyecarewecare.org to get more information on the foundation and see their work first hand. Thank you in advance for your support of the 2st Annual EyeCareWeCare Golf Tournament, planned for June 22, 2008, at Fleming Island Golf course. All funds go to benefit those in the Philippines who do not have access to proper eye care. We do appreciate all your support; such as hole sponsors, donations, etc., and of course your prayers! P.S. Please save all of your old eyeglasses.
